The 2026 Online Search: Difference between Basic SEO, Advanced SEO, GEO and AEO

In 2026, the way people find businesses online has changed a lot.

Before, we would just go on Google or Safari to search for something but now, we are getting answers directly from ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, and Google Gemini and sometimes without even clicking on a website.

And for small businesses, this can feel confusing. Because it’s not as simple as “I already have a website, so I’ll show up on AI or first line in Google.”

Unfortunately, that’s not really how it works anymore.

At RevUp Media, we look at search as levels.

First, you build a strong foundation. Then you grow. And eventually, you become the business people, and even AI, start to trust and recommend.

So let me explain to you what the difference is between Basic SEO, Advanced SEO, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization).

1. Basic SEO: Your starting point

Think of Basic SEO as your business just getting set up online.

It doesn’t make you popular, but it makes you real.

If you don’t have this, Google can’t really find you.

What it means:

If someone already knows your business name and searches for you, you should show up.

Main goal:

Make sure your website can be found and understood.

What gets done:

  • Set up your Google Business Profile

  • Create your main pages (Home, Services, Contact)

  • Fix basic issues like broken links or missing info.

Website size:

1–5 pages

2. Advanced SEO: This is where you grow

This is where you go from just “being online” to actually competing.

Instead of waiting for people to know you, now you show up when they’re searching for what you do.

What it means:

You start showing up when people search things like “Restaurant near me” or “best roofer in Kansas.”

Main goal:

Get your business in front of people who are already looking for your service.

What gets done:

  • Create a lot more pages (services, cities, blogs)

  • Target specific searches people are typing.

  • Improve your website speed and performance.

  • Build trust with links and content.

Website size:

30–100+ pages

3. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): Getting noticed by AI

This is newer and honestly is becoming more important with the days.

Most of the new generation are asking AI tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity AI and just trusting the answer.

So the goal here is simple:

You want AI to mention your business.

What it means:

Someone asks, “Who should I hire for this?” and your business is part of the answer.

Main goal:

Be a business that AI trusts and recommends.

What gets done:

  • Build your brand online (not just your website)

  • Get mentioned in places like forums, articles, or communities.

  • Show real expertise and real experience.

Focus:

Trust and reputation

4. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): Being the answer

This works together with GEO.

If GEO is about being trusted, AEO is about being clear.

You’re creating content in a way that’s easy for AI to grab and use as an answer.

What it means:

Your content shows up as the exact answer, whether it’s in Google, AI tools, or voice search.

Main goal:

Answer people’s questions clearly and directly.

What gets done:

  • Write simple, direct answers.

  • Structure content in a clean way (like Q&A)

  • Focus on real questions people ask.

Focus:

Clarity and simplicity

And an Extra tip

If your content sounds fake, overly “SEO,” or robotic… It’s not going to work anymore.

AI and people are looking for:

  • Real experience
