7 Signs Your Small Business Website Needs a Redesign

Is your website working for you?

A lot of small businesses have a website that's just sitting there. It was made years ago, or put together fast, and nobody has really looked at it since.

The problem is that your customers are looking at it. Before they call, they check your site, and in a few seconds they decide if you look like the right fit. If something feels off, they don't tell you. They just go to the next business on Google.

Here are 7 signs your website might be costing you customers, and what you can do about each one.

1. It's hard to use on a phone

Open your website on your phone right now. Do you have to pinch and zoom to read it? Are the buttons tiny, or does the menu cover half the screen?

Most local customers will look you up on their phone, often while they're in the car or on a break. If your site is hard to use there, they won't wait around.

Quick check: try to call your business from your own website using only your phone. If it takes more than one tap, that's a sign.

2. People can't tell what you do in 5 seconds

What you do

Where you do it

 How to reach you

When someone lands on your home page, they should know right away what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you.

If your home page opens with a big photo and a vague line like "Welcome to our website," visitors have to work to figure it out. Most won't.

A good website answers three questions in seconds: what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you.

3. The information is out of date

Old hours, services you don't offer anymore, a phone number that changed, or a "Copyright 2019" at the bottom. Small details like these make people wonder if you're still open.

If you've ever had a customer say "I didn't know you did that," your website probably isn't showing everything you offer.

4. It doesn't show up on Google

Search for your service and your city, like "concrete contractor Olathe" or "accounting services Kansas City." If you don't show up in the first few pages, customers looking for exactly what you do aren't finding you.

This usually happens when a site doesn't have clear page titles, descriptions, or a connection to your Google Business Profile.

5. It's slow to load

If your site takes more than a few seconds to open, many people leave before they see anything. Big photos that were never resized and old plugins are common reasons.

6. You can't update it yourself

If changing your hours or adding a photo means waiting days for someone else, or you don't even know who has the login, that's a problem. Your website should be easy enough that small updates don't feel like a project.

7. It doesn't look like your business anymore

Maybe your business grew, you changed your logo, or you added new services. If your website still looks like it did when you started, it's not telling your story anymore.

Your website is often the first impression. It should look like the business you are today.

Redesign or start over?

Not every website needs to be rebuilt from zero. Sometimes a refresh is enough.

A redesign usually makes sense when:

  • Your platform still works for you (Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, etc.)

  • Your content is mostly right, it just looks dated or is hard to read

  • You mainly need a cleaner look, better text, and clear buttons to call or book

Starting over usually makes sense when:

  • Your site is on a platform that's hard to update or no longer supported

  • You don't have access to your login or domain

  • Your business changed so much that almost every page needs to be rewritten

If you only have 2 or 3 of these signs, a refresh might be all you need. If you checked off 5 or more, it's probably time for a new website.

What a website redesign usually includes

  • A cleaner, mobile-friendly layout

  • Clear text that says what you do and where

  • Updated photos, services, hours, and contact info

  • Buttons that make it easy to call, book, or request a quote

  • Basic SEO: page titles, descriptions, and a connection to your Google Business Profile

  • Submitting the updated site to Google so it gets indexed

Quick answers

How long does a website redesign take? Most redesigns take 2 to 4 weeks once we have your updated photos, text, and logins. Simple refreshes can be faster.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I redesign my website? Not if it's done right. If any page addresses change, old links should be redirected to the new ones so Google and your customers can still find you.

Can you redesign my website on the platform I already have? Yes. We work with Wix, Wix Studio, WordPress, Squarespace, and Shopify. We'll just need your login information to get started. If you don't have it, we'll help you get access, either through the person who built your site or by recovering the account with your email.
